Increased longevity and return on investment

Another financial benefit is the increased longevity and higher return on investment (ROI) associated with electric forklifts. These forklifts typically have a longer lifespan due to their simpler design and fewer mechanical components that can wear out. Electric forklifts often retain a higher resale value compared to diesel or gas-powered models, providing businesses with better ROI when it’s time to upgrade their fleet.

Enhanced performance: The superior efficiency of electric forklifts

Instant torque and smooth operation

One of the standout advantages of electric forklifts is their ability to deliver instant torque, providing immediate power when needed. This feature allows for smooth and precise operation, particularly in environments that require frequent starts and stops. The electric motor’s responsiveness ensures that forklifts can manoeuvre effortlessly in tight spaces, improving overall manoeuvrability and reducing the time taken to complete tasks. This level of control not only boosts productivity but also enhances the safety of operations.

Consistent performance in various conditions

Electric forklifts also excel in delivering consistent performance under a variety of conditions. They generate less heat during operation compared to combustion engines, which reduces the risk of overheating and ensures reliable performance even in high-intensity environments. Whether operating in a temperature-controlled warehouse or a busy distribution centre, electric forklifts maintain their efficiency and effectiveness, providing dependable support for daily operations.

Energy efficiency and regenerative braking

Another impressive advantage is their energy efficiency, particularly through regenerative braking technology. This system captures energy during braking and deceleration, converting it back into stored energy within the battery. By utilising this reclaimed energy, electric forklifts can extend their battery life and reduce overall energy consumption. This enhances the forklift’s operational efficiency and contributes to lower energy costs and a reduced environmental impact. The combination of energy efficiency and innovative technology makes electric forklifts a highly effective choice for modern material handling needs.

With 1 in 6 workplace deaths involving a forklift, roughly 70% of which are preventable, the logic is straightforward: When operating a forklift, safety should be your number one priority. Yet each year, workplace-related injuries and deaths involving forklifts continue to occur across Australia, jeopardising not just the forklift operator but the people around them!

Education is key to forklift safety

Reducing the risk of forklift-related injuries is the responsibility of both an employer and the employee.

Be proactive – Be mindful of what can go wrong and don’t wait until an injury or death occurs before you implement safe working practices.

Here are the 5 most common reasons people are harmed or killed by a forklift:

Driver error – Pedestrians being struck, trapped or run over by a forklift

Inadequate traffic management

Not using correct attachments when needed

Assisting to adjust or steady a load

Forklift tip-overs

Hyworth Forklifts takes forklift safety seriously

Trust us – as a specialist name in the forklift hire services, we don’t take safety lightely. When you purchase or rent a forklift from Hyworth Forklifts, our forklifts undergo strict routine maintenance and repairs to ensure that all of our equipment complies with government WHS standards and runs safely. All forklifts are workshop tagged and tested.

Looking for ways to increase your forklift safety precautions? From our years of experience, we encourage you to try the following 6 things:

1. Correct training and supervision

Always remember the golden rule! Anyone who operates a forklift must be at least 18 years and hold a “high-risk work forklift” licence.

If a person is currently in training with a Registered Training Organisation for this licence, sure, they can operate a forklift, but someone who holds the correct license and has the appropriate workplace experience must supervise them.

There are no if’s, and’s or buts about it.

2. Effective traffic management

Effective traffic management is key to forklift safety, especially to reduce the risk of pedestrian injuries or fatalities.

As a rule of thumb: The workplace should be well-lit to ensure visibility and, at all times, should have pathways visibly marked (if possible use physical barriers such as bollards) to separate forklift paths from pedestrians. Any blind spots need to be minimised, any restricted areas or intersections clearly pointed out, and dedicated loading and unloading areas must be created.

Personal Protective Equipment should be worn by the forklift operator and high-vis workwear worn by any employees or visitors that may be walking outside of designated areas. The forklift must have working warning devices to alert others of movement, for example, a reversing alarm and horn.

Do you have ramps in your workplace? These should be secure and have edge protection. They must also meet the forklift manufacturer’s specified gradient for forklift operation.

Don’t forget about your speed! Speed can be controlled by specifying work area speed limits. Even at low speeds, forklift injuries can occur to both the driver and pedestrians if traffic areas are not properly controlled.

3. Forklift pre-start safety check

It is crucial that a pre-start safety check is conducted at the beginning of each shift, or anytime you operate a different forklift. Remember to report any damage or issues immediately so the forklift can be repaired before it is used again.

Try this pre-start safety checklist for your peace of mind:

Check the forklift and any attachments for deformation, damage or wear and make sure that the forklift load rating and attachments are right for the task

Ensure that you are familiar with the operating controls

Inspect that all lift and tilt systems including attachments are operating correctly

Check that the steering, brakes, operating controls, warning devices, and lights are all working properly

Inspect the tyres for any wear or damage

Check the fluid levels (oil, water, brake fluid, etc.)

Inspect any gas cylinders and their securing system (if present)

Ensure that seat belts are reliable

4. Seatbelts save lives

Seatbelts are there for a reason. When operating a forklift, if seatbelts and other restraint systems are provided then they should be worn. Unless a risk assessment has indicated that this is not safe, a safe thing to do and another measure has been applied, wear your seatbelt.

Why? Should the forklift tip-over, the seatbelt will keep the driver in the cab, rather than risk being thrown out and potentially being crushed or trapped by the forklift.

It’s more common than you think! A forklift can tip over for several reasons, including:

Excessive speed

Braking too hard

The driver leaning out of the cab

Overloading or unstable load

Moving when the mast and load is elevated

Surfaces that are sloped

Travelling down/turning sideways on ramps

5. Forklift attachments

A forklift should only be fitted with lifting attachments that are right for the load it plans to move, and as according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

You should always have information relating to the attachment fitted to the forklift on-hand, and by using this information and the forklift load chart, you can calculate the de-rated load capacity for the forklift.

6. Forklift hire guarantees equipment is well-maintained

Forklift rental can also assist in the reduction of workplace injuries as, here at Hyworth Forklifts, we guarantee the quality of our forklift rental fleet. You can rest assured each forklift has been professionally serviced and maintained, with all ongoing maintenance, servicing and repairs included in the rental cost.

Forklift hire provides you with the benefit of being able to keep up to date with quality equipment and enables timely forklift replacement without a large capital outlay.

By adopting safe workplace practices and ensuring that equipment is well-maintained the risk of forklift-related injuries can be greatly reduced.

More and more, companies are compelled to demonstrate their ‘green’ credentials and that means adopting more sustainable ways of doing business to reduce carbon footprint. Sustainability has of course reached the warehousing and manufacturing sector and one of the elements that can positively contribute to your business being greener is to choose electric forklifts.

Whether you own, rent or lease your forklifts, you have an abundance of choice. When it comes to sustainability, however, the most logical choice is an electric forklift, rather than an LPG or diesel forklift. In fact, around 60 percent of forklift purchases are electric and the trend is continuing. We’d like to explain why.

Electric forklifts are far more environmentally friendly

In addition to their zero emissions, electric forklifts offer a quieter operation, significantly reducing noise pollution in the workplace. This quieter environment not only enhances the comfort of workers but also contributes to a safer workspace by making it easier to hear warning signals and communicate effectively. Electric forklifts also have fewer moving parts compared to internal combustion models, which means less maintenance and lower operating costs over time. With advancements in battery technology, electric forklifts can now offer longer operating hours and faster charging times, minimizing downtime and improving overall productivity. Their ability to maintain a consistent performance level without the need for frequent refueling makes them an ideal choice for businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining efficiency. The combination of eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and operational benefits makes electric forklifts a compelling option for modern industries.

Electric forklifts cost less to run over the long term

Electric forklifts not only save on fuel costs but also have lower maintenance expenses, contributing to their cost-effectiveness over time. Since electric forklifts have fewer moving parts, they experience less wear and tear, resulting in fewer breakdowns and lower repair costs. This translates to less frequent servicing and reduced downtime, which is crucial for maintaining productivity in a busy warehouse or industrial setting. Additionally, electric forklifts don’t require oil changes, transmission repairs, or exhaust system maintenance, further reducing ongoing costs.

Charging an electric forklift is significantly cheaper than refueling a gas or diesel model. With the advancement of battery technology, the charging process has become faster and more efficient, allowing businesses to maximize forklift availability. Many modern electric forklifts are equipped with regenerative braking systems, which recharge the battery during operation, extending the time between charges and further lowering energy costs. Furthermore, the total cost of ownership for an electric forklift is lower due to government incentives and rebates available for adopting eco-friendly equipment. When considering these factors, it’s clear that investing in electric forklifts offers substantial long-term savings, making them a financially sound choice for businesses focused on cost efficiency.

No compromise on performance with electric forklifts

Companies that choose electric forklifts are finding that because of the heavy, centrally located battery, the centre of gravity is lower, resulting in superior stability and manoeuvrability. This also makes electric forklifts supremely suited to operation in confined spaces. A safer, healthier work environment with electric forklifts

Increasingly, industrial facilities such as factories and storage businesses are opting for electric forklifts not just because of their environmentally sound attributes but also because they are preferable in terms of workforce health. Zero emissions mean better air quality. Electric forklifts are also much quieter and operation is smoother, both important elements in worker health and safety.

Even if you have extensive experience operating a forklift, operator mistakes can still occur.

Each year preventable operator mistakes are still being made in the workplace. As well as putting lives in danger, these mistakes can lead to dire consequences for a business. The bottom line is simple – don’t become complacent when operating a forklift. It’s not worth the risk.

Below we’ve listed 5 of the most common forklift operator mistakes that are easily avoidable.

1. Check the forklift load capacity

Incorrect load capacity is the most common forklift operator mistake made. Since carrying a load that is too heavy is a definite way to destabilise your forklift, this feature is crucial to check before any operations.

The capacity is the maximum weight that the forklift can safely carry. To keep the forklift stable, you need to consider the lift capacity, the maximum weight it can safely carry, and the vertical lift travel.

You can check the load capacity on the forklift data plate, which contains all of the required information for that forklift, such as the load the forklift can safely lift at different mast orientations, or when there is an attachment fitted.

As the operator, it’s your responsibility to ensure the forklift you’re operating is the right fit for the task and that it has the capacity to handle your required load.

2. Forklift pre-safety checks are a must

Before you operate a forklift you should carry out a pre-operation inspection. A pre-start safety check can reduce the risk of forklift operator mistakes occurring, and should include:

Hydraulic fluid – Not checking hydraulic fluid can result in significant complications. Without proper fluid levels, the forklift lifting capacity may be impacted or not work at all. The load you’re carrying could drop, potentially harming pedestrians or damaging equipment.

Gas and fuel levels / Battery – Is there enough gas or fuel needed to complete the task? Or is the battery fully charged? Running out of gas or power in the middle of a task could cause damage to equipment or harm to pedestrians.

Tyre pressure – Flat or low tyre pressures can potentially cause the forklift to tip its load. A tyre with low pressure may also burst, resulting in the forklift tipping over. Repair any issues with your forklift tyres immediately.

Safety signal devices – Check that the horn, audible signals, entry bar, flashing lights, indicator lights etc. are all working properly to reduce the risk of injury to your co-workers. When carrying loads, forklifts can present many blind spots, which is why checking these signals prior to operating is highly important.

3. Monitor your speed

Another major forklift operator mistake, and a common cause of workplace accidents, is speeding. There should be a traffic management plan in place which determines the appropriate speed limits in your workplace. These speed limits should also be clearly signposted and visible to the forklift operator. Forklifts can be unstable and speeding or braking too fast can easily cause a forklift to topple over or lose its load.

Speeding up to get a job finished quicker can be dangerous to the operator, co-workers and pedestrians. Safety should always be at the top of your list. Not following the recommended speed limits in your workplace is an accident waiting to happen.

4. Improve your workplace communication

In a busy warehouse or storage yard, a forklift can be one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment. There are often pedestrians or co-workers close to operating forklifts. This can present another common forklift-related accident – a pedestrian getting struck by a moving forklift. By using proper communication this type of accident can be greatly reduced.

A few ways in which good forklift communication works include:

Advise people of your task and the route you will be taking so they are mindful of your operations.

Use the forklift signals – the horn, flashing lights, indicator lights and hand signals.

If possible, use an experienced signaller to assist you to safely lift a load and navigate the picking path.

Have visual barriers and designated forklift operation zones to prevent any unauthorised access.

Eye contact – with either the forklift operator or pedestrians, so you know that you are both aware of each other.

5. Stay aware of the dangers of forklift use

When operating a forklift, proper training and common sense is key to reducing forklift operator mistakes. You should only operate a forklift for the purpose it was designed and be vigilant about following workplace policies and safety protocols.

It’s also important to know the forklift picking path you’ll be taking and be aware of any obstacles along the way.The dangers of forklifts are usually downplayed, but forklift-related accidents are serious and can often be fatal.
